Covered Bridge and Heritage Festival
September 10-11, 2011, Noon - 5:00 PM
Join the Fairfield County Historical Parks as
we celebrate local heritage at the Covered Bridge
and Heritage Festival! There will be children's activities, living history, art displays,
live music, and much more going on throughout
Your Historical Parks
and many
other locations across the county.
Pick up your schedule and festival booklets at the following locations:
Rock Mill Park (festival days only), Bremen Area Historical Society,
The Georgian, and Wahkeena Nature Preserve
Accompanying the festival tour booklet will be self-guided
tours of all of Fairfield County's covered bridges.

Rock Mill
-
The flagship location for the
Covered Bridge and Heritage Festival! We're
still having the traditional Rock Mill Rally,
including tours of the mill and gorge, artisans displaying their works,
food vendors, games for kids, and much much more. Bring your camera - many opportunities
for prize winning photos!
Lockville Park -
At
1:00 and 3:00 PM, a re-enactor will
portray life during the canal days.
Smeck Farm -
Two blacksmiths will be displaying their
interactive skills continuously during the festival.
Vendors will display and demonstrate mountain biking
and archery equipment. There
will also be a collection of antique tractors.
Covered Bridges - Johnston and Mink Hollow
will be open for self-guided tours. Hanaway has limited road side
parking, but is available for photography.
Flight of the Hawk Park on Old
Logan Road, near the Tarkiln Road/US 33 interchange
is open for self-guided tours.
At Rock Mill, Smeck, and Lockville Parks there will be a raffle to win a table top paddle wheel fountain.

AHA! A Hands-on Adventure

Lancaster's most imaginative and exciting educational play
space. Built for children ages 0-7. AHA! is enjoyed by
children of all ages as well as the adults in their lives.
Features a water table, fire engine with fire-dousing laser,
a theater and so much more. To date, more than 65,000
visitors have come to see what the fun is all about and an
adventurously good time is guaranteed for all. |

Art and Clay on Main

Home of the Blue Shoe Arts Studio. This is a project of the
Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities. With a
focus on creativity, Art & Clay has quickly lived up to its
reputation as Lancaster's INclusive arts OUTlet. The gallery
and workshop are open 5 days per week for painting ceramics
and shopping our unique gallery of local artists' works and
fanciful gifts. Walk-ins are welcome to visit with the arts
in the Blue Shoe Arts studio, participating in a Kamp Camp
or Apple Afternoons art class, or show off your creative
side in our ceramics workshop. There is a party room
available and in case you didn't know... we have the most
interesting restrooms in town! |

Sherman House Museum -

Visit the birthplace of General William T. Sherman and his brother, US Senator
John Sherman, as we mark the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil
War. Many war-related artifacts, as well as family pieces and period
furniture are on display. In addition, costumed re-enactors will greet guests at
the cannon and discuss the use of artillery during the war.
Georgian Museum - 105 East Wheeling

Visit this magnificent 1832 mansion and enjoy a glimpse of gracious living in
the 1830s. The Maccrackens who built the home, know as Mt. Flora, will be
present to welcome you, share information about their magnificent home and
answer your questions. Sara Maccracken will be at home on Saturday from
1:00-2:30 PM; Sam Maccracken will be home on Sunday from 12:30-3:30 PM |

Fairfield
Heritage Trail
Hike, bike, rollerblade 7-1/2 miles of trail in Lancaster. From the unique
Sensory Park at Forest Rose School, via the OU-L and Lancaster High School
campuses, through the historic Walters-McCleery covered bridge, to Mary Burnham, Cenci Lake, Olivedale, Hunter, Martens, and Miller
Parks. This trail connects most of the parks, schools, and shopping areas
in Lancaster.

Lancaster Camp Ground
2151 West Fair Avenue,

Tours begin September 10 & 11 at 12:15 PM, 1:45 PM and 3:15
PM. Transportation will be provided on the grounds and those
who are participating should arrive at the Activity Building
(the first building as one enters the Camp Ground) fifteen
minutes early.
Five of the Camp Ground buildings will be open for the
Historical Tour that vividly demonstrate the role of the
Lancaster Camp Ground and Church Assembly in the lives of
thousands of people who have participated in its program and
spiritual development. These buildings include the Heritage
House, the Seigert Museum, the Davis Auditorium, the Grocery
Store, and the Woodside Hotel. The popular choral group "One Voice" will be singing for visitors in the temple at 2:00 PM. |

OU Lancaster

Stroll along Fetter's Run and through the two historic
bridges on Ohio University-Lancaster's 113-acre campus. The
Herb Turner Collection of pioneer farming tools and
equipment is available for public viewing inside Brasee Hall on Saturday
from 8:00 AM-2:00 PM. Closed on Sunday.
John Bright Bridge #1 - A rare work of art in iron.
Features a rigid-suspension or bowstring design. This
bridge, also from the Poplar Creek area was reconstructed
and preserved in memory of David Johns.
John Bright Bridge #2 - Moved from Poplar Creek, is a
unique suspension truss design of wood and iron with wooden
siding and gable roof used in only a few bridges built in
Ohio. |

Pickerington/Violet Township Historical Society

The Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society Museum
welcomes visitors in the center of the Olde Pickerington
Village. Housed in the historic Carnegie Library building
opened in 1916, the museum showcases early Pickerington area
businesses, local schools, civic groups, early household
items and much more. Gift items are available for purchase
in the gift shop.

Village of Sugar
Grove
Stoneburner's Grocery
Store / Sugar Grove Museum
100 South Main Street, Sugar Grove
You will enjoy walking into a country store of times gone
by. And while browsing through the museum, enjoy a scoop of
ice cream at the soda fountain. The Sugar Grove Museum is
located in the store and holds artifacts, photos and history
of the residents of Sugar Grove and Berne Township. The
museum opened in 2000.
Red Caboose in Sugar Grove - Museum and Welcome Center
Built in 1949 by the American Car & Foundry Co. It is a C&O
"System Standard" first generation steel caboose. It
now sets on tracks adjacent to the location of the former
depot which had served needs of the C&O and other lines.
Restored Vintage 1894 Double-Cell Jail House
The jail house is located directly behind the Village of
Sugar Grove Municipal office at 101 Bridge Street.
On your way out of Sugar Grove, be sure to visit
Flight of the Hawk Park on Old Logan Road, near the
Tarkiln Road/US 33 interchange. |

Wahkeena Nature Preserve

Wahkeena Nature Preserve, a 150 acre preserve for birds and
other wildlife, has been part of the Fairfield County
community for over 50 years. During the Festival Weekend,
regular site admission will be free to Fairfield
County residents. Visitors may walk the self-guided trail
system, explore the nature center, and browse the gift shop
during regular hours: 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. In addition, guided
activities will be offered throughout the weekend.
Think only fish live in a pond? Think again! Use a dip net
to discover life underwater in our pond. 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
Fun for the whole family.
Sunday, September 11 - 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM - Can't see the
forest for the trees? We'll show you! Join one of our staff
naturalists on a leisurely walk to find out how nature is
connected to you! Approximately 90 minutes. Not suitable for
young children.
